Considering Messiah

Quick review: We have learned the10 Commandments as well as 2 diagnostic questions, both designed to get people thinking about whether they believe that, 1) They will go Heaven, and 2) Why. We also defined “GRACE” as a gift from G_d, and explained the Bible’s claim that salvation is not EARNED by good deeds/works. I have outlined WHY people cannot earn their own salvation.

We pondered mankind’s great PREDICAMENT: How can a sinner, in the presence of G_d, Whose standard is perfection, ever commune with Him? Most recently, we have addressed the nature of G_d: He is both JUST and MERCIFUL. We put forth that G_d has reckoned these (seemingly) conflicting attributes of His character, through the PERSON of MESSIAH, in order for sinful mankind to have HOPE in communing with our Creator. So, lets consider WHAT is a MESSIAH.

The word “messiah” means “anointed one”. There have been many “messiahs” throughout the Bible, leaders who were anointed/set apart by G_d to lead the people. But the Bible speaks of an anointed ONE, who will transcend mortal man: The “Messiah” (capital “M”). WHO will this MESSIAH be? Consider the words of these prophets:

“Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, yet One will come from you to be ruler over Israel for Me. His origin is from antiquity, from eternity past.” Micah 5:2

“A Child will be born to us, a Son will be given, and the government will be on His shoulders. He will be named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty G_d, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. The dominion will be vast and its prosperity will never end.” Isaiah 9:6-7a

“In the beginning was the Word. The Word was with G_d, and the Word was G_d.” John 1:1 “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” John 1:14

The Biblical understanding of the Messiah is that G_d Himself, Whom has existed from eternity past - existing in three persons: “Father, Messiah (Son) & Spirit – at the time He appointed, would inhabit the womb of a virgin girl (of His choosing) and be born as a baby: fully G_d, and fully human. Christians call His Name “Jesus”, which in its Hebrew form, “Yeshua” means “G_d Saves”. Literally, G_D. But what did MESSIAH DO?

“All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the L_rd has laid on Him the sin of us all” Isaiah 53:6

Yeshua lived a sinless life on earth. But, most importantly for mankind, He died on a Roman cross, and paid the penalty for the sin of mankind. He rose from the grave, thus purchasing a place for us in Heaven, which we must each receive through Him. HOW do we receive this gift of atonement, offered EXCLUSIVELY through Messiah, yet LIBERALLY to anyone who would accept it? Through FAITH.
